VFW Post 12173

30 Gifford Rd, Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08087, United States

Description

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has a distinguished history dating back to 1899 when it was founded by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. Motivated by the lack of support for wounded and sick veterans upon their return home, these individuals formed local organizations to advocate for their rights and benefits.

In the early years, the VFW rapidly expanded, with chapters established in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. By 1915, membership reached 5,000, and by 1936, it soared to almost 200,000. Over the decades, the VFW has played a pivotal role in shaping veterans' policies and securing essential benefits.

The VFW's impact includes instrumental contributions to:

  • The establishment of the Veterans Administration.

  • The creation of the GI Bill for the 20th century.

  • The development of the national cemetery system.

  • Advocacy for compensation for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange and those diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome.

In 2008, the VFW achieved a significant victory with the passage of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, providing expanded educational benefits to active-duty service members and members of the Guard and Reserves serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The organization has also championed improvements in medical services for women veterans.

Noteworthy contributions extend beyond policy advocacy. The VFW has financially supported the creation of memorials such as the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II, and Women in Military Service memorials. In 2005, it became the first veterans' organization to contribute to the construction of the Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010.

The commitment of the VFW and its nearly 2 million members extends to extensive volunteerism, contributing over 8.6 million hours annually to the community. This involvement includes initiatives like Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week.

Moreover, the VFW allocates over $3 million annually in college scholarships and savings bonds for students. The organization consistently advocates for veterans at the highest levels, including elevating the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet. Through its long and impactful history, the VFW continues to be a steadfast advocate for the rights, benefits, and well-being of veterans and their families.
