Serving with valor in the 1st Infantry Division during World War I, Schumacher tragically succumbed to enemy gas attacks just days before his 19th birthday. Joseph A. Schumacher's journey began when he sailed to France on August 17, 1917, as part of the 5th Company, 1st Trench Mortar Battery. His untimely demise on February 26, 1918, marked a somber chapter in history. In 1923, at his family's request, Schumacher's body returned to the U.S., finding a final resting place in Bristol Cemetery, Croydon, Pennsylvania. Today, he lies beside his parents, a symbol of selfless service and sacrifice.
