Description

Atlantic County, New Jersey, has a rich history dating back to 1664 when Charles II granted the land to James, Duke of York. Explored by European sea captains in the 16th century, it was originally inhabited by the LENNI-LENAPE. The first settlement, Somers Point, emerged in the late 1600s.

Notable figures like John Somers, Daniel Leeds, and George May played key roles. Mays Landing, named after George May, became the county seat in 1837. Atlantic County was officially established in 1837, retaining its boundaries. Shipyards, mills, and iron furnaces thrived, making shipbuilding a major industry.

Diverse settlements, including Brigantine, Hammonton, Pleasantville, and Egg Harbor City, developed unique identities. In 1974, the county shifted to an Executive Form of government. Today, spanning 555.70 square miles and incorporating 23 municipalities, Atlantic County maintains its commitment to citizen-service, rooted in a long-standing history of development and community pride. The estimated population in 2010 was 274,549.
